Event Details
WAAM is proud to host FOCUS: Gaia 2019 artist, micro-sculptor Sergey Jivetin on Sunday, March 31, 2-4 PM for a special event planned in conjunction with the close of the exhibition. Jivetin will be hand-engraving select motifs on heirloom seeds as part of his Furrow project. Audience members are encouraged to bring seeds they have special connection with, to see representations of their personal stories embedded and programmed into these seeds.
Seeds are fundamental units in our relationship with food, agriculture and the natural environment. On both physical and symbolic levels, seeds collectively carry the history of complex motives and consequences of plant domestication. Seeds have been both silent witnesses and active participants in waves of travels and migrations, growth and decline, individual and societal transformations. Seeds are also records of more personal stories of people or families that cultivated them for generations. Such diversity and richness in the deeply rooted relationships of people and seeds remains mostly silent, physically and figuratively locked inside the coat of each seed.
By traveling the country and connecting with a multitude of people and organizations that contribute to seed advocacy, Furrow project seeks to make those often compelling stories visible, to externalize and memorialize the contributions of professional and enthusiast growers, breeders and seed-savers.
The nature of the artist’s hand guiding a cutting tool and creating a miniature furrow in a shell of a seed alludes to a farmer’s plow piercing through the top layer of soil, releasing nutrients and jump-starting a cycle of growth. The symbolic act of piercing through the seed coat to uncover the information contained within, is coupled with the physical function of helping it germinate if planted.
Sergey Jivetin’s work is currently on view in FOCUS: Gaia 2019 (March 9 – 31) in WAAM’s Main Gallery.

Event Details
Merry Prankster Roger Lazoff will discuss the current exhibition Get on the Bus. The exhibition includes posters, film, and books from Lazoff’s collection, many documenting the six years he spent living with and around the Pranksters.
In the summer of 1964, Ken Kesey and his friends, known as the Merry Pranksters, undertook an epic cross-country bus trip. In a decade of Happenings, this event, chronicled on film and in print, became a celebration and a touchstone for the emerging counter-culture. In later years, the Merry Pranksters continued to demonstrate their version of free expression, both graphically and through what might now be called performance art.
This exhibition asks and suggests the answer to the question: is Ken Kesey still relevant today and if so why? It is my belief that he is, not only because of his great novels, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometimes a Great Notion, but also because he was so central to the cultural transformation that took place in the 60s and early 70s. Kesey’s circle of influence encompassed the Grateful Dead, John Barlow developer of the Well, the first online information source, and Steward Brand, who created the Whole Earth Catalogue, Kesey can also be seen as one of the key figures in the development of new art forms as can be seen in the 1964 Bus Trip movies. To put it in the parlance of the time, Kesey’s vibes were everywhere and they are still being felt today.

ARTISTS STATEMENT
I am a mother, wife, woman, and artist. I identify with these roles daily, sometimes independently of each other but more often these conflicting responsibilities are intertwined. When I look around my house I see remnants of life, and accumulated evidence of time passing. As a mother, I strive to provide a loving home that is both clean and safe for my daughter. As a wife married to another female artist I strive to foster a supportive partnership while building an environment where our family can grow. As a woman, I am redefining my own gender roles in the context of my family. As an artist, my work is informed by the reconciliation of these various roles. This current body of work focuses on my fascination with detritus consisting of lint, bugs, dirt, and hair that accumulate in the nooks and crannies of my home. Each image is a portrait of the trace evidence from a period of time, illustrating a balance between the artistic, feminine, professional, and domestic self.

Juror Amy Cheng, Professor of Art, SUNY New Paltz, and Gallery Director Carl Van Brunt will lead a discussion about the current exhibition, FOCUS: Gaia 2019.
In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of the Earth and the ancestral mother of all life. Today, we are acutely aware that Mother Earth is threatened by global warming and other destructive factors resulting from human activity. Work on view relates to the creative forces of Nature from poetic, socio-political, aesthetic, scientific, and spiritual perspectives.

ARTISTS STATEMENT
My paintings are mysterious narratives, stories hidden and obvious at once, shadowy, strange and sometimes ambiguous. The works often include language and explore the internal landscapes of the imagination as well as the American scene. My art has been influenced by a career in American storytelling as a playwright, screenwriter, novelist, and director.

ARTISTS STATEMENT
The constructions I am making are analog, unmediated, using materials that are handled and put together without mystery or coding. The pieces reveal themselves; they are transparent in their making and rougher than they first appear. At a time when information is both ever present and insufficient, their offering of information is minimal, tied to the day to day of objects and situations. They seem familiar but are not easily placed. These works are in a constant state of doing and undoing, building up and taking apart. Hovering between 2 and three dimensions, there are questions of structure versus surface. Does the drawing determine the structure or does the structure determine the drawing on top? It has taken me time to realize that I am interested in the simultaneous presence of stillness and energy; stillness that comes with the heightened perception of looking, and energy that is contained without expressive gesture, but within the sometimes awkward relationship of one thing to another.

Introduced last year, Far and Wide National is open for applications from artists living throughout the United States. This year’s juror, Kimberly Camp, President, Galerie Marie, selected 34 artists from the 191 applications we received from artists across the nation. Kimberly will discuss her selections during a gallery talk on Saturday, May 11th from 2-3 PM.
JURORS STATEMENT
Far and wide is an opportunity on a national level, for artists to demonstrate their command of traditional forms and their willingness to innovate, rejuvenate and reposition media and genre to create fresh forms of expression. The entries were of exceptional quality, making the job of selection difficult. What you see here is a mix of the best of different approaches, different uses of materials, and different ideas.
Contemporary thinking about art has expanded to include diverse voices, a renewed interest in realism, and the need for artists and art patrons to reconsider cultural appropriation and identity. Here is an exceptional collection of artworks that mix digital imagery, blur the lines between craft and fine art, and demonstrate mastery of visual traditions. Some of the works capture a whimsy that is far too scarce in today’s art world. Some use traditional themes and archetypal images in new ways. Others capture movement and mood in a way that is refreshing and enlightening.
I selected 35 artists from the almost 200 entries from across the United States. From portraiture to landscapes, to re-imagining archetypal stories, these 35 artists demonstrate a mastery of their mediums and their willingness to push the edges of our imagination with distinct aesthetic statements of identity and purpose. Through distinctly unique views of the subtle nuances demonstrated in color, form, and light, these artists are a wonderful sampling of the richness of an ever-expanding aesthetic vocabulary.

Join Roger Lazoff for a screening of Ken Kesey’s The Bus Movie, Episode 1: Journey to the East, Saturday, June 29 at 2 PM. Free Admission.
This film is being screened in conjunction with the current exhibition Get on the Bus with Roger Lazoff in WAAM’s Solo Gallery, June 15 – July 7, 2019.
The items in this show; posters, film, books – by Kesey and others – illustrate the multimedia interests of the group.
I went to California in 1974 and quickly fell into the Kesey orbit. Some of the objects in this exhibition came to me during the six years I lived with and around the Pranksters; others represent the next generation.
Kesey’s circle of influence encompassed the Grateful Dead, John Barlow developer of The WELL, the first online information source, and Stewart Brand, who created the Whole Earth Catalogue, Kesey can also be seen as one of the key figures in the development of new art forms as can be seen in the 1964 Bus Trip movies. To put it in the parlance of the time, Kesey’s vibes were everywhere and they are still being felt today.

ABOUT HABITAT for ARTISTS
Founded by Simon Draper, Habitat for Artists (HFA) is a collective project that uses the idea of the artist’s studio as a catalyst for mutual engagement between artists and communities. The “habitats” are small, temporary, 6’ x 6’ studios installed for experiencing art and connecting with the process of artists engaging in creative work. HFA invites artists to work in these small, temporary studios. While exploring their own creative process, artists engage in active dialogues with a new audience. All are invited to participate in this new interaction and discussion about art, the artist’s role, as well as topics which are pertinent or relevant to the community.
Support for Habitat for Artists at WAAM is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
Additional support provided by the Klock Kingston Foundation,
Hyman J. & Florence Hammerman Family Foundation & individual donors.

ARTISTS STATEMENT
For the better part of two decades, I have worked on photographic projects that relate, by turns directly and obliquely, to the United States intelligence community and attendant issues including surveillance, secrecy, and violence. My current work is, in equal parts, an ongoing interrogation of photographic veracity and a critique of authoritarian power. The two are not unrelated. This preoccupation with veracity finds a foothold in spaces, objects, and surfaces that masquerade as quotidian but are clearly unreliable narrators.
A forthcoming collaborative book project (with my good friend and colleague Edward Schwarzschild) that examines the growth industry of Homeland Security in America features scores of interviews with and portraits of DHS and Intelligence personnel. The book also includes some of the work you see here: large-scale photographs of models based on Google Earth imagery of sites where several of these interviews took place.
Recent philosophical positions in logic, including Object Oriented Ontology and Speculative Realism, also factor into this equation, as does the Modernist obsession with the grid, particularly as they inform photography’s digital evolution. The familiar grey checkerboard pattern, for example, of a transparent layer in Photoshop (which is now more a signifier of empty space than actual empty space) represents more than a passive, benign background—it is part of our new, weird grammar of visualizing the invisible. Hand-constructed environments and objects impersonate their virtual counterparts and expose the circular logic that often undergirds not only specific imaging technologies including texture mapping, 3D printing and augmented reality; but also some of the persistent epistemological underpinnings of photography, generally.

Join Roger Lazoff for a screening of Ken Kesey’s The Bus Movie, Episode 2: North to Madhattan, Sunday, July 7 at 2 PM. Free Admission.
This film is being screened in conjunction with the current exhibition Get on the Bus with Roger Lazoff in WAAM’s Solo Gallery, June 15 – July 7, 2019.

Cuomo.

We’re very excited this August 29 to present, on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of its world premiere in Woodstock, NY, John Cage’s 4’33” produced by Norm Magnusson and performed by The Perry Beekman Duo featuring Lou Pappas. Its world premier was in a concert produced by WAAM at the Maverick Concert Hall as a benefit for our “Artists Welfare Fund.” For the 9th consecutive year, we will present a performance of this truly revolutionary and still controversial composition in our Towbin Wing on the anniversary of the original performance.
This year, the Perry Beekman Duo featuring Lou Pappas on bass will perform the Cage piece along with some of his own selections. Columnist, editor and John Cage scholar Kay Larson will introduce the piece and host a Q&A following the performance.
Kay Larson was the art critic for New York Magazine for 14 years, and has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times. Click here to read a recent article she wrote on Cage and Buddhism for the Huffington Post. Larson is the author of Where the Heart Beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists. Kay is currently working on her second biography of Cage.

Past 4’33” Performances:
- 2011 – Mimi Goese and Ben Neill
- 2012 – Vibraphonist extraordinaire Karl Berger

Each participant will create, by the chance in drawing cards, a specific point for the creation of lines that will be placed on an panel, 4 ‘ by 5’ as a work in process. Discussions about either the process or the meanings connected to Tarot will be welcome. Completed artwork that represent a sampling of the variation of the process will be displayed. Philip Guston – The Essential Line
and performance of Morton Feldman’s, For Philip Guston
August 10 – September 1, 2019
Opening Reception: Sat. August 17, 4-6pm
Performance: Sat. August 10, 1-5pm
The Essential Line features Philip Guston’s “pure drawings” and in conjunction with the exhibition a performance of Morton Feldman’s composition, For Philip Guston.
The selection of twelve ink on paper drawings, referred to as the “pure drawings,” were completed in a two year period of time between 1966 and 1967 when Guston had abandoned his painting to concentrate only on drawing. This was an extremely liberating time for Guston. In an interview with Mark Stevens that appeared in The New Republic (March 15, 1980) the artist commented on this work saying – “It was a clearing the decks. It was like starting again, like a child, just taking a very simple line”…..what would happen, I thought, if I eliminated everything except just raw feeling and the brush and ink, the simplest of means without even the seductions of color. It was like testing myself, to see what I am, what I can do.”
A special performance of Morton Feldman’s composition, For Philip Guston will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition. Composed in 1984, Feldman (1926-1987) was inspired by the work of painter Philip Guston (1913-1980), who had passed away in 1980. Feldman and Guston had a long friendship that ended with a falling out which Feldman came to regret. Guston moved to Woodstock in the late 60’s, and thus with this performance, Feldman and Guston are brought back together again.
The composition will be performed by New York’s Bent Duo, an experimental NYC-based duo project investigating the limits of chamber music for piano and percussion. Founded in 2015, the duo has performed at a wide variety of venues and is equally committed to works that exploit the performers’ virtuosic instrumental technique as to those that are developing new performance techniques entirely. Bent Duo members Bill Solomon, percussionist and David Friend, pianist are respected members of the NYC classical and new music scenes and frequently perform in NYC, across the country, and abroad with groups including Ensemble Signal, Grand Band, Talujon Percussion, Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the American Composers Orchestra, among others.
The quiet, slow composition of For Philip Guston is complimented by the essential, minimal nature of the “pure drawings.” The exhibition of the drawings will be installed in a gallery adjacent to the performance area allowing audience members to take in both art and music throughout the performance. This is an event that transcends a typical concert experience, but rather presents an immersive and contemplative environment that will resonate with audience members. Due to the extreme length of the work, (over four hours), audience members will be invited to listen to the performance for any duration they wish, walking through the gallery to see works or sitting down to focus on the music.

JOHN MURPHY, PhD
Art and the Counterculture in 1960s Woodstock
Woodstock: the word is shorthand for the 1960s counterculture. Artists as well as writers and musicians contributed to Woodstock’s reputation as a bohemian enclave. As early as 1952 experimental composer John Cage debuted his (in)famous 4’33” — four-and-half minutes of silence. Inspired by Cage, avant-garde artist Allan Kaprow staged a 1962 “Happening” in the forests outside Woodstock for which sculptor Eva Hesse made her first three-dimensional piece. Gerd Stern, an intermedia pioneer and founder of the experimental art collective USCO, moved to Woodstock in 1964. In the late 1960s New York School painter Philip Guston moved to Maverick Road to reinvent his practice. This lecture will explore Woodstock as a ferment of art, experimentation, and creativity in the 1960s, a period in which artists as much as writers and musicians contributed to a growing counterculture opposed to mainstream values.
The program is a partnership between the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, the Historical Society of Woodstock, Maverick Concerts, the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, and the Woodstock Artists Association.
About John Murphy PhD: John P. Murphy PhD is the Hoehn Curatorial Fellow for Prints at the University of San Diego and a specialist on Arts and Crafts colonies. He has published work on Ivan Albright, Bolton Brown, William Gropper, and Charles White. His dissertation examined the colonies of Byrdcliffe, Roycroft, and Rose Valley. His research has been supported with grants and fellowships from the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library, the Huntington Library, and the Wolfsonian Museum. He was a 2014-2015 Luce/ACLS Fellow in American art.

Cuomo.

Inhabitation brings four/five professional dancers to HFA to engage in a series of dance scores with the environmental space and pedestrians. The dance scores invite the public to choose how to engage with the dance be it: become a mover in the dance; to offer directions to the dancers or to observe and then reflect on paper with drawing or words. The dance scores are simple structures that are people friendly and encourage social engagement. These dance scores also encourage people to define their personal space within the social space and environmental space. Using string as a prop, we explore a grid, the perimeter, and personal spaces to consider how humans use space.

Contemporary artwork donated to benefit WAAM’s exhibition programs.
WAAM was founded in 1919 by artists seeking to foster their fellow artists by providing exhibition space and building a strong community of artistic support. The contemporary artists of our region celebrate this long history by donating artwork to WAAM to be auctioned in WAAM’s first contemporary art auction. These donations provide important funding that allows WAAM to continue this proud legacy, providing artists a showcase to exhibit and a community that fosters free and equal expression.

Sunday, March 22, 2 PM
Dr. Bruce Weber will give a gallery walk-through and talk for the exhibition Otto Bierhals: A German-American Artist in Woodstock (February 1 – May 10, 2020) in the Phoebe and Belmont Towbin Wing.
Otto Bierhals (1879-1944) spent over twenty summers in Woodstock, where he became one of the historic art colony’s leading landscapists. Active as a painter, watercolorist, printmaker, and illustrator, Bierhals devoted himself to depicting the picturesque mountains, forests, fields, farmlands, houses, and waterways of the area, and in the process developing great technical mastery of the palette knife. In 1929, he bought a tract on Mill Hill Road on which he built a combined house, gallery, and school, successfully marketing his work and offering lessons in landscape painting. This is the first solo display of Bierhals’ work since his 1938 exhibition at the Albany Institute of History and Art. Otto Bierhals: A German-American Artist in Woodstock features forty works highlighting Bierhals’ accomplishments as a landscape painter of the Catskills, a delineator of scenes of the local village, New York City and his native Germany, and as a painter of still lifes. Among the treasures on view is Henry Peper at the Forge, which pictures the local blacksmith engaged in work at his shop. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue featuring an essay on Bierhals’ life and career by art historian Bruce Weber, who has served as the guest curator.

About the performers:
Marco Benevento is an American pianist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, who’s been a fixture of the New York experimental music rock and jazz scene since 1999. He is the founder and recording engineer of Fred Short, a recording studio in Upstate New York, and a member of the rock groups Benevento/Russo Duo and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, both of which feature his regular musical collaborator Joe Russo.
Kay Larson is an acclaimed art critic, columnist, editor, and Cage scholar. She began her career in journalism in Cambridge, Massachusetts at The Real Paper, then served as an associate editor at Artnews and an art critic for the Village Voice. She was the art critic for New York Magazine for 14 years and has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times. In 1994, she entered Zen practice at a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York. Larson’s first biography on Cage is titled Where the Heart Beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists. She is currently working on a second book about Cage.
Norm Magnussen, Impresario, artist, advertising curmudgeon, and founder of the art movement funism.
Norm has this to say about his inspiration for the revival of this extraordinary event:
“In 2008, I was teaching a class at the Woodstock Day School entitled “Art That’s Changed the Way I Look at The World Around Me.” It was so much fun having so many artists and thoughtful individuals come and speak on that topic. David Van Tieghem was one of them. I knew he was going to perform 4’33”. He performed it on the piano, just as David Tudor had so many years before. I knew of the piece but had never heard it performed and did not expect to be so deeply moved by it. Later that day, I started looking into this wonderful piece and discovered two things: one, that its world premiere had been right here in Woodstock; and two, that there were no commemorations of this historic event by any Woodstock organizations! A few years later, I approached WAAM, who had produced the world-premiere concert of this piece in 1952. I asked if they’d like to host a concert and talk about this piece, and they said yes. In 2011, slightly delayed by Hurricane Irene, Mimi Goese and Ben Neill performed and it was so beautiful that I thought that would be it. I would never produce another concert like this. My resolve didn’t last:
2011 – Mimi Goese and Ben Neill
2012 – Vibraphonist extraordinaire Karl Berger
2013 – Paul McMahon and Linda Mary Montano
2014 – Baird Hersey and Prana
2015 – The Clear Light Ensemble
2016 – Tracy Bonham
2017 – Jill Sobule
2018 – David Van Tieghem

Join us Thursday January 21 at 7 pm for a zoom discussion about our current Towbin Wing exhibition: Celebrating the Centennial: Selections from the Permanent Collection of the Woodstock Artists Association, Part 1.
Moderated by WAAM Executive Director Nicole Goldberg, Bruce Weber and Tom Wolf will be discussing their roles in curating for our exhibition and writing for our Centennial publication 100 Years of Community and Art.
Bruce Weber received his Ph.D. in art history at the Graduate School of the City University of New York. A leading scholar of American art of the past two centuries, Dr. Weber has served as a curator at several museums, and as the director of research and exhibitions at a leading New York gallery. He has curated numerous exhibitions and, among other topics, written on the art of William Merritt Chase, Robert Frederick Blum, Marsden Hartley, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Stuart Davis, and Will Barnet. In recent years he has focused his attention on researching, lecturing, writing and curating on the historic Woodstock art colony. He is the producer of learningwoodstockartcolony.com
Tom Wolf is Professor of Art History and Visual Culture at Bard College. He is an authority on the history of Woodstock, New York, as an art colony. This research led him to study Asian American artists, who had a presence in the colony, and from there his interest has broadened to a wider examination of Asian American artists in the first half of the 20th century.
