Scott Chasse: Friends in Higher Places
EXHIBITION: April 21–June 4, 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, April 22, 4-6pm
SOLO GALLERY
On view in this presentation is a series of paintings entitled Scroll, which questions the ways in which historical narratives are created and validated through public representation. The artist’s works suggest an alternative history that attributes modern human existence to what Chasse calls “visitors from beyond.” The artwork incorporates references to UFOs, symbols invented by the artist, and stylistic nods to cave art and tropes in science fiction. By pointing to otherness, the artist invites the viewer to fantasize, reexamine historical narratives, and contemplate notions of subjectivity in our collective understanding of truth and fiction. Chasse is one of five artists chosen for a 2023 solo exhibition by jurors Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori, co-directors of SPRING/BREAK Art Show.
