Woodstock Artists Association: One Hundred Years of Community and Art is a handsome volume that celebrates the centennial of the Woodstock Artists Association, the historic organization founded by artists in 1919. The evolution of the WAA parallels the history of Twentieth-century American art, with some unique regional variations. It includes famous artists such as George Bellows, John Flannagan, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Bradley Walker Tomlin, and Philip Guston, as well as lesser-known artists whose works are now receiving increasing attention. Woodstock was a center for ambitious and motivated women artists, whose contributions look especially relevant at present—and play a significant role in the book. The history of the Association, and the controversies and artistic innovations that accompanied it, are examined in essays by art historians Tom Wolf (Bard College) and Bruce Weber, while an extensive chronology by Emily R.
