“In November of 2019, just after my father passed away, I began the four large acrylic-on-linen paintings that you see here. As a result of mourning, I cried a lot that fall and winter, which is reflected in my references to “a Column of Tears”, and “A Curtain of Tears” in three of the paintings and their titles. I continued working on the unstretched pieces into the early Spring of this year, as the country, and our especially hard-hit state woke up to the devastating realities of Covid19. My period of intense personal anguish segued into a much larger-than-me-and-mine state of grief.

The drizzled figure that makes up what I call ‘A Large Indigo Hare Racing Through a Field of Gray Matter…’, the bright orange drops on the same painting, and the iridescent violet splatters on the vertical piece, all express some of the frantic, frenetic anxiety I’ve felt as a result of the now multiple national crises registered. And even while my very visceral grief and anxieties persist, I am as deeply inspired as I have ever been. It is almost inexplicable, but as I think on it, it may be a reflexive response. As if I am psychically reaching deep down for what I might do to make it better. And what I come up with is paint.’ So, I do.” – Gina Dominique
