“Until recently, most of my work was based on landscapes near my home in the northern Catskills. The devastating changes to life as we know it in 2020 have caused me to alter my subject matter, and to explore resonances with the pandemic of 1918-19. I have a collection of hats from that era, and veiled portraits of a woman wearing them feel more relevant than landscapes or still-lifes. The hats’ varied textures and ornamentation are beautiful. Their style is clearly from another time, but the masked face and searching eyes are once again a deeply troubling part of everyday life.” – Amy Silberkleit
