Making Meaning: Artist Educators honors the work that Artist Educators do to make the world a better place. These works represent some of the teaching artists with whom WAAM has had the privilege to partner. Teaching artists often see themselves as facilitators, engaging students in the process of learning, the same process that they themselves engage in while making their own art. The term ‘teaching’ is used here, but not in relation to transmitting knowledge. Instead, the artist educator encourages learners to actively question and embark on a process of inquiry through the different materials they are exploring, as well as the ideas they are trying to communicate through their art. Through trial and error, art making allows us all, whether we are making or facilitating, to embark on a lifetime of learning, connecting, problem solving and growing, allowing us the tools to find our own way in the complex world that we live in.
