ARTISTS STATEMENT
“Nothing was ever the same as they said it would be. It’s what I haven’t seen before that I recognize.”
– Diane Arbus
I make abstract collages and paintings with tactile surfaces. They are similar to puzzles, asking the viewer to ponder how they are made and what is beneath them.
I call them fragments. I use linen, canvas, wood and paper, I paint over them and under them. Some are tough and raw, others are reworked to the point of irrefutable frailty. Brittle and delicate.
Tough and raw. Brittle and delicate.
Something like how one might feel in the world today.
Most of the work was done this summer at a Byrdcliffe Art Cabin. This unpolished, unspoiled setting, almost like living
outdoors, allowed me to produce work that I believe might not have been developed otherwise.
