Christine Hales:
Contemporary Icons and Matisse’s World

trinitydetailblurb_for_websiteIcons are a treasure trove of material for contemporary painting. “From them (icons) we learn how to understand art,” Henri Matisse.  Christine Simoneau Hales, Master iconographer, outlines  similarities between icons and the work of artists such as Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall and Mark Rothko. Using digital slides, Christine shows what these and other great artists have in common with iconographers of the Byzantine era.

Christine Hales, a contemporary landscape painter and ballet dancer, encountered icons in 1995 in a convent in France. She has studied and practiced iconography and egg tempera painting for over twenty years. Hales is a professional member of the American Art Therapy Association, ordained minister, and member of the British Association of Iconographers in London. She will be teaching an introduction to icon writing class in Woodstock this May at the Reformed Church on Tinker Street  and  has been teaching iconography in Albany for over 7 years. Her icons are in many private and public collections internationally and in churches in the Albany area. Her websites are: www.newchristianicons.com, www.christinehales.com, and www.iconwritingclasses.com .
