FOCUS: Fish and Dish – A Fresh Take on Still Life

Juror Jason Andrew takes a non-traditional look at this very traditional form by selecting contemporary work, across all genres, to stand in conversation with a painting pulled directly from WAAM’s Permanent Collection. De Hirsch Margules’ vibrant Still Life painting will be centrally hung in our Main Gallery and provide a springboard for a fresh look at the age-old genre so historically popular across movements, cultures, and periods. With a respectful nod to the past, Mr. Andrew will select work that expands upon, toys with, or stretches the idea of what makes a still life, a still life.

About the Juror
 – Jason Andrew is an independent scholar, curator, and producer. A prominent figure in the Brooklyn art scene, Mr. Andrew is the co-founder and director of Norte Maar, a non-profit now celebrating its 15th anniversary encouraging, promoting, and presenting collaborative projects in the arts. Specializing in the field of Postwar American Art, Mr. Andrew is also a Founding Partner at Artist Estate Studio, LLC, an entity that advocates for the legacy of artists like Jack Tworkov and Elizabeth Murray among others. His recent regional survey of artists living and working in Southern Appalachia was on view at the Asheville Art Museum through February 3, 2020.
