Event Details

Rena Leinberger and Thomas Albrecht present Remnants, Hour Upon Hour, a month-long series of performances exploring contingencies of time and trace: simultaneous actions that sometimes overlap, but also exist as individual gestures and missed opportunities. The shifting records of presence are both visible and hidden, activating the museum space and remaining dynamic throughout the WAAM’s Radius 50 exhibition.

Think “Waiting for Godot.” If this extended performance seems absurd it is (on purpose) but it is also by turns deeply serious and hysterically funny. If you’ve never gotten into performance art this a great place to start. Performance art aficionados will be delighted by Leinberger’s and Albrecht’s take on this increasingly important genre. Open your mind a bit and you’ll find it flooded with meaning on a myriad of topics. Part postmodern situation comedy and part a serious critique of the boundaries and limits of what we know and what we believe, Leinberger and Albrecht are not to be missed.

The series of performances uses basic materials including fabric, foam, building materials and fabricated stones in a process of constructing representations. Throughout the performances, as landscapes take shape, are dismantled, then reconstructed in other representations, evocations of Hudson River School Painting, Absurdist Theatre, the artifice of cinema, and the cyclorama slide into a failed sublime.

The simultaneous actions unfold in proximity to each other, layering both individual and adjacent gestures to leave material traces of what has happened in the space, yet museum visitors will only see incomplete information as to what has occurred.
