A presentation by Roger Ricco
Saturday, June 4 | 3-4pm
Roger Ricco has been a pioneer of Folk, Self-Taught and Outsider Art since the late-1970s, and has since dedicated himself to the research and growth of the genre within the contemporary art landscape. On June 4, he will discuss and present elements of his personal archive of historic footage, film stills, and photos taken throughout his career. He will give his account of the emergence, development, and establishment of the Outsider art market, as well as the discovery and promotion of many historically renowned Self-Taught artists including William Hawkins, Thornton Dial, Bill Traylor, Henry Darger, and Martin Ramirez among many others.
Roger Ricco is a co-founder/partner (now retired) with Frank Maresca, of Ricco/Maresca, a well-known New York venue specializing in contemporary art by both schooled and Self-taught/Outsider artists, co-author of seven books on the world of self taught an outsider work and speaks publicly on that subject and on the subject of artists on the autism and Asperger’s spectrum. Ricco was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He was subsequently awarded the prestigious Rome prize in painting for two years in a row. Ricco is still an active artist working in painting, photography and video documentaries. He has lived in Woodstock, New York for several decades and much of his current work includes organic and natural material from his environments. rogerricco.com
