Event Details

We’re very excited this August 29 to present, on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of its world premier in Woodstock, NY, John Cage’s 4’33” produced by Norman Magnusson and performed by David Van Tieghem. Its world premier was in a concert produced by WAAM at the Maverick Concert Hall as a benefit for our “Artists Welfare Fund.” For the 8th consecutive year, we will present a performance of this truly revolutionary and still controversial composition in our Towbin Wing on the anniversary of the original performance.

This year, award winning avant-garde percussionist, Broadway composer and sound designer David Van Tieghem will perform the Cage piece and some of his own compositions. Columnist, editor and John Cage scholar Kay Larson will introduce the piece and host a Q&A following the performance.

Kay Larson was the art critic for New York Magazine for 14 years, and has been a frequent contributor to The New York Times.  Click here to read a recent article she wrote on Cage and Buddhism for the Huffington Post. Larson is the author of Where the Heart Beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists. Kay is currently working on her second biography of Cage.
