FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY, AUG 16, 17 & 18, 12-5 PM

My three day project will be a demonstration of how a personal data collecting system can be used to create a large format piece of Art. The use of decks of Tarot will serve as a means to accumulate data. It will demonstrate an approach to how an action can be transposed into a symbol. Each participant will create, by the chance in drawing cards, a specific point for the creation of lines that will be placed on an panel, 4 ‘ by 5’ as a work in process. Discussions about either the process or the meanings connected to Tarot will be welcome. Completed artwork that represent a sampling of the variation of the process will be displayed. The randomness found in contemporary art and how data collecting can transition into a system for art making will be highlighted.

ABOUT HABITAT for ARTISTS

Founded by Simon Draper, Habitat for Artists (HFA) is a collective project that uses the idea of the artist’s studio as a catalyst for mutual engagement between artists and communities. The “habitats” are small, temporary, 6’ x 6’ studios installed for experiencing art and connecting with the process of artists engaging in creative work. HFA invites artists to work in these small, temporary studios. While exploring their own creative process, artists engage in active dialogues with a new audience. All are invited to participate in this new interaction and discussion about art, the artist’s role, as well as topics which are pertinent or relevant to the community.

Support for Habitat for Artists at WAAM is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Additional support provided by the Klock Kingston Foundation,
Hyman J. & Florence Hammerman Family Foundation & individual donors.
