FOCUS ONLINE: A Different Kind of Now
Format: 15-18 artists, 4 works each
Juror: Douglas Culhane, visual artist, writer, and professor at Amherst College.
DEADLINE: August 31, 2020
2020 has already been cemented in history as a year of unprecedented change. The effects of current events on individual artists are vast and already we see memorable works being created which will be inexorably linked to these specific moments in time. As our lives have been upended in ways both large and small, we have all been challenged to reevaluate and evolve. We have also been challenged to find beauty and hope in different forms. A Different Kind of Now, WAAM’s first Online Focus Exhibition, examines the ways in which recent changes are expressed and possibly implemented, through the creative voice. We are inviting artists to submit work that speaks to their individual interpretations of recent circumstances, but also gesture toward a vision of what comes next.
About the Juror – Douglas Culhane is a visual artist and writer who works in drawing, sculpture, poetry, and hybrid forms. His work has appeared in the Colorado Review, Viz. Inter-Arts (UC Santa Cruz), Broadsided Press, and in galleries and alternative spaces nationally. He recently exhibited his installation “Ghost House” at the Chesterwood Historic Trust in Stockbridge, MA. He is the recipient of awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He holds a BA from Colgate University and an MA from the University of Iowa. He teaches drawing, image, and text and sculpture at Amherst College.
