This retrospective of more than 30 works traces the creative evolution of one of the Woodstock Art Colony’s most quietly powerful voices. Spanning over five decades of Julia Searing Leaycraft’s life and art, the exhibition invites visitors into a deeply personal yet socially resonant world shaped by beauty, independence, and meaning found in everyday life. At once grounded and visionary, her paintings and prints reflect influences from Tonalism and Impressionism to the American Scene movement and early abstraction.
Drawing on the traditions of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting alongside modernist experimentation, Leaycraft developed a style defined by dynamic compositions, subtle spatial distortions, and emotionally charged brushwork. Her art is both lyrical, rigorous, and imbued with what she once described as “soul power.” Julia’s work evokes the visual poetry of contemporaries Georgina Klitgaard, Doris Lee, Sally Jacobs, and Phoebe Towbin—Woodstock women artists who shared a sensitivity to domestic life and rural landscapes. While highly skilled, their work often carried a “primitive” directness that captures the emotional resonance of memory and the spirit of a bygone time.
