Joseph P. Eckhardt, author of Living Large: Wilna Hervey and Nan Mason, will present an illustrated lecture on The Adventures of Wilna and Nan. Hervey, a silent film star, and her life long partner Mason were artists and important members of the Woodstock artists community for many years beginning in the 1920s. Following the talk by Eckhardt, a screening of two of Wilna’s silent Toonerville Trolley comedies will be presented with live musical accompaniment by Marta Waterman. Eckhardt’s book Living Large: Wilna Hervey and Nan Mason is available in the WAAM Museum Shop, ($39.50).
Marta Waterman is a pianist who accompanies silent films by improvising the music on the spot as she watches the films with the audience. She prepares for each film by watching it many times beforehand to get a strong idea of what will happen at each moment. Her goal is to create a sonic background that helps the audience become absorbed in the actions and emotions of the film, not in her playing.
