The WAAM offers a full schedule of juried exhibitions (see submission calendar) in the Main Gallery, the Solo Gallery and the Founder’s Gallery. Exhibitions vary in theme to accommodate a wide-range of subjects and styles. Jurors have included gallery owners and museum professionals, as well as important artists, from throughout the Hudson Valley and the tri-state area.
All members are invited to participate in the annual, non-juried Holiday Show & Sale held in December. Artists who qualify to become Active Members may participate in another non-juried show.
Artists are invited to submit work to be judged for one-person exhibitions in the Solo Gallery. Previous jurors for solo shows include Bruce Weber Senior Curator, 19th and Early 20th Century Art, National Academy Museum, James Cox of the James Cox Gallery, Woodstock, and Carrie Haddad of the Haddad Gallery, Hudson, NY.
The WAAM has granted numerous awards to deserving artists, including a Juror’s Choice Award (each award named by a donor) for most exhibitions in the Main Gallery and the Founder’s Gallery. Additionally, the Sally Jacobs/Phoebe Towbin Award of $500, is given annually to recognize an artist who has consistently exhibited works of high merit at the WAAM. The WAAM also presents the Yasuo Kuniyoshi Award annually and provides assistance to artists in financial need. Additional awards in 2012 will include the Leilani Claire Award for Oustanding Photograph of the Year, the Mary Wilson Award for Outstanding Landscape or Still Life of the Year and the Robert Angeloch Award for Excellence in Printmaking.
A special award was created in 2005 for a graduating high school student in Ulster County who plans to continue studies in art at a college or university. The award is named in memory of Garrett Henderson Ackerman, and eligible students are recommended by their high school art teachers. Recipients receive $100 and an additional $100 gift certificate to Catskill Art & Office Supply. Catskill Art & Office Supply also funds the People’s Choice Award which is awarded in recognition of the artist receiving the most votes from visitors to monthly exhibitions in the Main Gallery.
