MINIATURES
I began using six inch by eight inch paintings as studies for even smaller paintings when I needed to find an alternative method of painting. I found I could manipulate the paint more effectively and respond to the subject matter with less pressure and more spontaneity. I fell in love with the inherent intimacy of the works as well as the still life genre. Finding romance in everyday objects is a meditative process describing my private inner world. Both of my major influences are teachers from The Woodstock School of Art. Karen O’Neil introduced me to a high color palette and a love of direct painting taken from the American Impressionists and Charles Hawthorne while Zhang Hong Nian taught the power of a limited color palette and appreciation of the old masters.
