Ellen Nieves
Many years ago I was caught at sunset in a tropical storm. I sat alone on the beach, watching the wind blow clouds over the ocean. Then everything became still and the rain came down suddenly. The sky turned blue-black. I waited until I was soaked, then ran onto the wraparound porch of the closest house. I remember the tin roof echoing and intensifying the sounds of the storm. Inside, an aged victrola was playing, what else- a torch song, and a soft yellow light was shining through the house's many wooden shutters. My whole body relaxed into the storm, the wind, the darkness, the light and the sound. I was in tune with the world. It was as if a breathtaking chasm of time and space had opened up and was exploding and unfolding before me. It had the magical quality of joy that comes out of solitude and intimate participation with nature. And this sensation of wholeness in relation to nature is the basis for my paintings. They are my memories of wonders both internal and external.
