Matt Mays

Our attention is an ability we have to discriminate; only focusing on what we want to perceive. My art is a rising awareness of my own perceptions. The subject matter is created to encourage harmless assumptions tobe made; even minorjudgments. To some, what we see is true; others may be too embedded in our system to feel.

Our socialization teaches us to judge ourselves and everything around us. Nature is the ultimate source of reason, and we are still nature. I embrace everyinterpretation of my work, whether they are seen as a statement about life, legacies or a common environmental issue. After all, art is not the truth; it is only a means of exposing it. People in the past have asked me, "are you painting another junk car?" I'd prefer to call them relics. Matt Mays was born in Sydney, Australia in 1975. Later his family moved to a tobacco farm in Appomattox, Virginia. They relocated half way between Thomas Jefferson's summer home and Jerry Falwell's conservative grasp. He now lives and works in Woodstock, NY; selling his art across the states.
