Ian Laughlin
My artwork functions as my life-record, documenting my subconcious manifestations into consciousness, in an attempt to capture the ever expanding depths of our existence.
The play of objective and subjective form has always fascinated me and in my painted sculpture, or multi-dimensional painting, ambiguity and figurative suggestions play off each other. Whether the pieces are wall projections, self standing, or free hanging, differing views of the same piece allow for differing readings of physical form and pictorial space.
Using aluminium as armature and surface building material, it gains structural strength as it is built up. The painting of the sculpture allows me to compliment and counter the pictorial with the physical form. Small works, while fully realised as works in their own right, are often developed into larger pieces.
I consider a particular work complete when the piece fully synthesizes and contains my current thoughts and feelings.
