Yale Epstein

I haven't evolved a THEORY about working.

All theories seem to dissipate in the face of the FACT of painting.

Logic is pre-empted by the ACT of painting.

I might begin with an IDEA . eg. “simplicity” or “complexity” or “exuberance” or “mystery,” of “open space” or of “depth” or of “light”; or I might begin with a THOUGHT of color at one time, or a shape or line or direction at another, etc., etc.

Once down on paper, the idea or thought becomes an EVENT..............which gently suggests, or vigorously demands another event.

From there on I work as intuitively as I can, permitting the unknown (surprises) to enter. Much of what happens is unpredictable. The components (shapes, weights, directions, balance, movements, space, intervals, etc.,) begin to manifest their own order and occupy their own appropriate place.

In essence, I discover the subject in the PROCESS of painting, so that in the end, the PAINTING becomes the subject.

I am not concerned that my work maintain a “recognizable” STYLE. Quite the contrary, it is an exciting prerogative to allow a broad range of possibilities to emerge; from the “tight” to the “loose,” from the obvious to the subtle, from depicting an event, place, or feeling, to playful or serious experimentation with media or ideas.

The struggle is to maintain that delicate balance of INTUITION and COGNITION, without one destroying the relevance and value of the other..............both are a variety of TRUTH.
