This series of botanical watercolors is the result of a self-imposed challenge: to commit directly on paper an immediate visual experience. The flower is a symbol of the ultimate paradox: the perfection of nature, the transience of form- the eternal return found in the ephemeral moment. To confront the flower is to confront a mirror defining space and time and to learn from a gentle teacher the art of submission to the now. Since flowers are in constant movement, the composition could only be maintained for a maximum of eight hours: after that, the pretext for the watercolor would be finished and the painting complete. Watercolor on paper is an unforgiving medium, (it tolerates no lapse in concentration or superficiality of mark) the sense of urgency and focus is intense: not unlike the mind of a runner in a marathon who must co-ordinate all faculties to finish a race. Because of the severity of the medium and the limits imposed by time, what emerges is a painting that had the spontaneity of a glance and yet the spatial depth of a prolonged study.
