A documentary about the fantasy world of artist Mark Hogancamp. Followed by a discussion with the artist and Janet Hicks.
In association with Upstate Films Woodstock, we present a special screening of MARWENCOL. This feature documentary is about the fantasy world of Kingstonian Mark Hogancamp who, after being beaten into a brain-damaging coma by five men outside a bar in Kingston back in April 2000, pursued his photography and art by building Marwencol, a 1/6th scale World War II-era Belgian town in his backyard. After populating the town with dolls representing his friends and family, he created life-like photographs detailing the town’s many relationships and dramas. Playing in the town, photographing the action, helped Mark recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack. When Marwencol and Mark’s photographs were discovered, a prestigious New York art gallery set up a show. Suddenly Mark’s homemade therapy is deemed “art”, forcing him to choose between the safety of his fantasy life and the real world that he’d avoided since the attack.
In Person: Mark Hogancamp & Janet Hicks
MARWENCOL has won over 25 awards; The Los Angeles Times calls the film “an exhilarating, utterly unique experience” while the Village Voice says that it’s “exactly the sort of mysterious and almost holy experience you hope to get from documentaries and rarely do.”
